STP 38th Annual Symposium is organized by Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) and will be held from Jun 22 - 27, 2019 at Raleigh Convention Center, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States of America.

Environmental Toxicologic Pathology and One Health

Mention the word “environment,” and our brains naturally conjure up pastoral or oceanic settings populated by a plethora of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. But our environment is also comprised of urban landscapes, agricultural fields, office buildings, factory floors, the insides of our homes, and our internal microbiomes. Whether exposures occur via intentional therapeutic administration or incidental contact, many of the toxic and potentially toxic substances encountered by humans or animals are essentially exogenous; therefore, at its core, the discipline of toxicologic pathology is all fundamentally “environmental.” Investigating the complex web of interactions between environmental contaminants, animals, and humans requires a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates veterinary and human toxicologic pathologists and toxicologists with other scientists such as ecologists, wildlife biologists, epidemiologists, plus various additional health care professionals. Such collaborative efforts comprise the heart of the One Health initiative.

The six plenary sessions of the 2019 STP Symposium will encompass a wide variety of cutting-edge approaches related to the detection, characterization, mechanistic understanding, and regulatory implications of chemical and physical hazards in natural and anthropomorphic ecosystems, and their recognized or potential deleterious consequences for animals and humans. Symposium session themes include: the toxicology and pathology of air pollution; the toxicologic pathology of workplace agents; toxicity assessment paradigms in regulatory pathology; endocrine disruption and reproductive pathology; pathology in ecological research with implications for One Health; and the integration of big data technologies with toxicologic pathology.

Presentations will emphasize toxicologic outcomes that involve real-world scenarios and incorporate the latest scientific developments. Examples of the broad range of individual topics include: examination of the relationship between childhood exposure to air pollution and Alzheimer’s disease; rapidly progressive pneumoconiosis in Appalachian coal miners; the assessment of cell phone radiation toxicity; intersex and reproductive abnormalities in fish; effects of pollutants at the ecosystem level; and the diagnostic applications of pathology artificial intelligence for global health and medicine.

Scientific sessions (Monday through Thursday); Exhibit Hall access; Breaks (Monday through Thursday), and one admission to both the Welcome Reception (Sunday) and the President’s Reception (Wednesday).

* A letter of verification from a department chairman must accompany student registrations. Any student registration received with no verification letter will be processed at the higher non-member fee. Copies of student identification cards are not acceptable.

** Nonmembers who apply for membership prior to July 1 and who are accepted will receive complimentary dues for the remainder of 2019 and the online journal issues for the remainder of the year.

Student registrants, each CE course is $50.
