PCCA Canada: Aseptic Technique Compounding Course is organized by Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) and will be held from Nov 06 - 08, 2019 at PCCA Corporation, London, Ontario, Canada.

Target Audience:
This application-based course is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are interested in gaining basic aseptic technique knowledge and the skills necessary to compound high-risk preparations.

Accreditation:
Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians completing this program in its entirety will receive 20 hours of continuing education credit (2.0 CEUs).

Course Description:
This application-based course is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are interested in gaining basic aseptic technique knowledge and the skills necessary to compound high-risk preparations. The current USP Chapter <797> Regulations will be addressed and applied through skills assessment testing. Attendees will learn how to prepare ophthalmics, intrathecals and oil injections. Hands-on preparation of low-, medium- and high-risk compounds will be performed along with Personnel Validations (Media Fills). Individuals will learn the correct use of laminar flow hoods and proper aseptic technique. In addition, attendees will focus on basic microbiology including discussions on proper cleaning and disinfection methods, and appropriate gowning procedures. Prior completion of PCCA’s Comprehensive Compounding Course (C3) (or Primary Training Course) is beneficial. 

Learning Objectives:
Aseptic Technique Home Study
• Discuss sterile pharmaceutical compounding including concepts, techniques and procedures.
• Perform pharmaceutical calculations involved in the sterile compounding process including metric conversion, percentage strength and isotonicity.
• Describe the various methods of sterilization, storage requirements and process validation.
• Discuss the importance of quality control systems including environmental control, personnel, as well as beyond-use-dating.
 
Aseptic Technique Compounding Course
• Demonstrate aseptic hand washing techniques and proper gowning procedures.
• Demonstrate cleaning of horizontal and vertical laminar flow hoods.
• Demonstrate aseptic technique skills by performing a media fill.
• Demonstrate preparation of sterile ophthalmics, sterile intravenous (IV) medications, sterile intramuscular (IM) High Risk Level compounds including injectables and sterile intrathecal preparations.
• Demonstrate how to make sterile preparations using different methods of sterilization.
• Demonstrate and explain the effects of airflow disruption when working in an ISO Class 5 environment.
• Describe the importance of basic microbiology and how it relates to cleaning and disinfection programs.
• Demonstrate the appropriate placement of materials and hands so that all critical sites receive first air.
• Explain the different forms of sterilization and demonstrate selection of proper filter choice.

Aseptic Technique Compounding Course - Legal & Regulatory Issues 
• Assess clean room compliance with the USP <797> and ASHP Guidelines.
• Describe importance of Quality Assurance and Quality Control adoption in the laboratory Policy and Procedure Manual.
• Describe personnel, environmental, and product testing requirements that meet USP <797> Guidelines.
• Assess compliance with State Board of Pharmacy practice regulations for a sterile compounding laboratory.
