Course Description:
Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is a functionally based, patientcentered therapeutic approach practiced by Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists who work with individuals who live with cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury and other neuromuscular-based movement disorders. Individuals with
central nervous system dysfunction often have difficulty sustaining positions and moving, limiting their functional independence. NDT is a hands-on intervention approach for individuals of any age, and ability level, who live with neuromuscular-based movement dysfunction. The NDT process of intervention requires detailed analysis of movement,
and ongoing assessment. The focus of NDT-based treatment is to enhance the client function based on the client/family’s need and wants. The goals of the client/family form the foundation of the intervention plan. NDT- trained therapists work in all practice settings. We believe in a team approach. NDT-trained therapists work closely with the individual, their family, care providers, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, to develop and manage a comprehensive patientcentered program. NDT is an intervention approach that has stood the test of time! Recent advances in the field of neurobiology, the emergence of new theories of motor control, brain recovery, and a greater understanding of the development and refinement of movement across the life span has enhanced, enriched, and supported the NDT approach.

Course Objectives:
1. Observe, analyze and synthesize effective and ineffective posture and movement and its impact on a client’s functional abilities/limitations.
2. Demonstrate integration of course content information within practicum assignment:
• Postural control
• Typical/Atypical development/movement analysis in function
• Evaluation and Treatment planning
• Treatment
• Analysis and facilitation of movement
• Parent/caregiver training/home management
• Team work
• PT, OT, ST content
• Neurophysiology
3. Identify components of typical movement and how it relates to the development of: sensory processing, upper extremity, and visual motor function.
4. Problem solve multi-system, and single system impairments as it relates to sensory-motor processing, upper extremity function and visual motor function and chose effective NDT strategies to address identified functional limitations.
