Medical Speech Pathology and Dysphagia Practice: Managing Complex Adult Patients with Pulmonary, Digestive and Airway Disorders is organized by Northern Speech Services (NSS) and will be held from May 04 - 05, 2019 at Houston Marriott West Loop by The Galleria, Houston, Texas, United States of America.

The target audience for this medical event is Speech-language pathologists who evaluate and treat adult patients with dysphagia across the continuum of care, including skilled nursing facilities, home health, outpatient and hospital settings. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1.2 CEUs.

Course Description : 
Speech-Language Pathologists working in the medical setting face unique challenges. Patients referred for evaluation and treatment often have multiple diagnoses impacting swallowing function. This seminar provides essential information on managing these complex adult patients. Discussed will be swallow function and treatment planning as related to body systems, the aging process, and patient lab values. Specifically, this clinically focused seminar will :
• Identify risk factors of pneumonia.
• Differentiate between aspiration and other etiologies of pneumonia.
• Describe respiratory and deglutitive interactions in the aerodigestive tract.
• Explain how common pulmonary diseases affect normal breathing.
• Review common esophageal pathologies and how they could lead to dysphagia symptoms.
• Describe what are appropriate and informed decisions regarding patients with a tracheostomy.
• Explain the meaning of various diagnostic reports in the medical record.
• Identify when symptoms of dysphagia related to normal aging magnify the effects of disease.
• Discuss various compensatory and restorative behavioral treatments to determine when they are, and are not, appropriate.
