Course Description:
Anterior Neck Protocol for Dysphagia and Dysphonia
The concept of myofascial release (MFR) is not new, and utilization of this model in the treatment of vocalists is part of the educational learning objectives for physical therapitst, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists and osteopathic physicians. Learning laryngeal MFR will provide an additional tool for practitioners to address speech and swallowing problems such as muscle tension dysphonia or dysphagia. This two-day workshop will consist of lecture, demonstrations, hands-on practice and learner assessment.
Non-physicians should review their state boards to determine if Laryngeal MFR is permitted in their professional scope of practice. In this course, learners will practice Laryngeal MFR techniques on each other and will be required to sign a release prior to participation.
This course will help healthcare providers acquire the basic knowledge and technical skills needed to effectively use Laryngeal Myofascial Release (MFR) techniques in the clinical setting. The use of Laryngeal MFR therapy may significantly improve the functions of the vocal tract in patients with occupational dysphonia.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:
• Recall relevant antomoical structures withing the head and neck
• Apply conceptual knowledge of anatomy by palpating required landmarks within the head and neck
• Discuss the principles, indications and contraindications for myofascial release
• Perform myofascila release technique to soft tissue structures with guidance
• Recall the steps for analysis of the vocal and pharyngeal tracts
• Perform each step of the anterior neck protocol with guidance
• Assess a vocalist volunteer using the anterior neck protocol with supervision
• Treat a vocalist volunteer using myofascial release technique with supervision
• Demonstrate proficiency in the performance of myofascial release technique to head and neck structures.
