Attending a Foundations workshop is the perfect way to build on your expertise, and engage with nurses in your local area. These workshops are developed and delivered by nurse leaders, and offer an engaging program that provides an overview of the key skills and knowledge required for your daily practice.

Learning Objectives:
On completion of these modules, participants will have an understanding of the roles and
responsibilities associated with:

Australian Primary Health Care System and Primary Health Care
• The Australian healthcare system and the role of primary health care
• The general practice environment including financing
• The health status of Indigenous Australians
• The role of the practice nurse in the general practice environment
• National competency standards and regulatory requirements for nurses
• Regulatory requirements for nurses
• Scope of practice using tools such as the National Decision Making Framework
• Liability, professional indemnity, insurance and mandatory reporting
• Legislative requirements of National Registration standards
• Defining health promotion and the determinants of health
• Preventive activities in general practice

Clinical Assessment and Chronic Disease Management
• Develop an understanding of the importance of attending to a comprehensive clinical
assessment of all patients, and the impact of consistent data quality on patient outcomes
• Understand the benefits of a thorough clinical assessment when providing high quality care
in relation to the early detection of risk factors leading to chronic disease, and coordinated
intervention in chronic disease management
• Gain an awareness of the impact of chronic disease on the individual, the practice and the
community
• Develop an understanding of the role of the Primary Care Nurse in clinical assessment and
chronic disease management
• Demonstrate an understanding of relevant MBS item numbers
and how nurses play a role in care planning, health
assessments and cycles of care
