About the program:
Diabetes is a very common and serious disease. New diabetes therapies and technologies are expanding dramatically and evidence-based guidelines are continually changing, making management more challenging. Keeping current with the latest therapies for the management of diabetes and related comorbidities is difficult and time-consuming.

Primary care clinicians are increasingly responsible for diabetes management and education. This requires extensive knowledge of the natural history of diabetes and recommended treatment options, as well as the ability to teach patients how to successfully manage their disease. Given the complex and diverse nature of diabetes, education on evidence-based practice guidelines and protocols are vital to a physician’s ability to effectively treat patients.

This program uses lectures and interactive learning activities based on the latest research and clinically proven therapies. With an emphasis on application, this comprehensive program for medical professionals includes practice-based case studies and breakout sessions on specialized topics. This program will give providers increased knowledge, skills, and confidence, and provide tools to manage this complex chronic disease.

Program objectives:
Following this course, participants will be able to:
• Discuss the underlying defects and natural history of diabetes and associated complications
• Evaluate noninsulin diabetes therapies and identify principles for selecting, combining and advancing therapies, including medication affordability
• Initiate insulin therapy based on patient assessment and adjust insulin doses based on pattern management or using diabetes technologies
• Develop strategies to improve adherence to diabetes self-management activities such as eating for better health and glucose monitoring
• Outline a systematic approach for managing diabetes and hypertension and dyslipidemia
• Describe diabetes management of the elderly and those with microvascular complications
• Discuss evidence-based weight loss strategies for overweight patients
• Implement at least two practice changes into patient care.
