This course aims to educate medical professionals about the science and safety of cannabis. We recognize the need for primary care providers to acquire knowledge about non-opioid approaches for controlling pain. This includes neuropathic, inflammatory, musculoskeletal, and cancer-associated pain.

The class is open to physicians and allied healthcare professionals who are seeking factual information about cannabis.

• Describe the mechanism of action of cannabinoids and terpenes.
• Contrast the effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol on the endocannabinoid system.
• Critique labels of cannabis products and certificates of analysis in order to identify potential hazards versus benefits of available formulations.
• Determine the unique risks of cannabis for pediatric and geriatric patients.
• Specify commonly recommended starting doses for cannabis products based on available research.
• Define what a certificate of analysis is and the information it contains.
• Identify additional testing measures needed in order to assess product quality and reliability.
• Describe ways to assess patients in order to determine whether cannabis is effective for pain.
