2019 UVA Anesthesiology Point-of-Care (PoCUS) Course is organized by University of Virginia (UVA) and will be held from Jan 23 - 24, 2019 at The Village at Breckenridge, Breckenridge, Colorado, United States of America. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
The course will be heavily geared towards hands-on learning. The instructor to student ratio will be 1:4 and there will be minimal lecture time in the classroom to maximize time with your hands on the ultrasound probe. Prior to attending the course, participants will be expected to complete online learning in point of care ultrasound, following the flipped classroom model.
Course Objectives :
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
Basic Cardiac Ultrasound (FATE)
• Identify the normal sonographic structures of the heart including atria, ventricles, valves and great vessels
• Obtain the 6 basic FATE views including inferior vena cava and pleura
• Use M-mode for assessment of cardiac dimensions and function
• Recognize common pathology
• Recognize rare but life threatening pathology
• Use echocardiographic findings to guide clinical decision making
• Independently perform and interpret a focused cardiac ultrasound exam
Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST)
• Identify free fluid in specific anatomic locations
• Independently perform and interpret a FAST exam
Ultrasound Assessment of Gastric Content
• Differentiate qualitatively between empty stomach vs. clear fluid vs. solid
• Interpret findings depending on patient position
• Assess the risk of aspiration based qualitative findings and quantitative estimations
• Independently perform and interpret gastric ultrasound
Basic Lung Ultrasound
• Choose the appropriate ultrasound system and probe for lung ultrasound imaging
• Identify lung and chest wall structures using 2D ultrasound: skin, muscle, intercostal space, pleura, diaphragm
• Identify the basic sonographaphic findings of lung ultrasound: A-lines, B-lines, lung sliding, lung point and lung pulse
• Use M-mode to identify characteristic air artifacts suggesting normal aeration pattern: “sea-shore sign”, A-lines with lung sliding and lung pulse
• Use goal directed lung-ultrasound imaging when evaluating the critical care patient
• Independely perform and interpret a point-of-care lung ultrasound exam
