Description:
The UCSF Mini-Residency in Dental Sleep Medicine is designed for dental professionals to develop in-depth knowledge and clinical procedures for treating sleep-related breathing disorders. Participants will become skilled at utilizing oral appliance therapy in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), sleep disordered breathing, and snoring patients in their practices.

The medical lecturers are experts in sleep medicine, coming from both the UCSF and Stanford Schools of Medicine. Additional speakers were selected from all over North America to provide a distinguished international faculty.

Learning Objectives:
• Define the dental and medical terminology used in sleep medicine and OSA.
• Describe the pathophysiology, demographics and sequelae of OSA.
• Analyze and evaluate polysomnogram reports.
• Describe the role of medical evaluation and the multidisciplinary membership.
• Describe the treatment options available for OSA including the indications, contraindications,
complications and the side effects associated with each.
• Describe the practical concepts required for building a successful dental sleep medicine
• practice including informed consent, relationships with physicians, sources of patient referrals,
follow-up for patients, records keeping, and medical insurance billing.
