Voice and Swallowing Disorders: Evaluation and Treatment Methods for Shared Anatomy and Physiology is organized by Northern Speech Services (NSS) and will be held during Jun 09 - 10, 2018 at South San Francisco Conference Center, South San Francisco, California, United States of America.

The target audience for this medical event is Speech-language pathologists who evaluate and treat adult patients with dysphagia and/or voice disorders across the continuum of care, including skilled nursing facilities, home health, outpatient and hospital settings. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1.0 ASHA CEUs.

Conference Description :
Two practicing speech-language pathologists, one a voice clinician and one a dysphagia clinician, team up to present this intensive, two-day seminar. Described will be shared anatomy and physiology of voice and swallow and effective evaluation and treatment procedures that can impact both voice production and swallowing function. A presentation will include a demonstration of techniques and hands-on practice in assessment and treatment modalities for both voice and swallowing.

Presented will be the anatomy, physiology, and neuroanatomy of the upper aerodigestive tract with the opportunity to view the larynx through the lens of both the voice and the dysphagia clinician. Utilizing the same video based cases, both presenters will develop treatment plans from their perspective voice or dysphagia specialties, thus providing participants with insight into the areas that are omitted when only viewing with a singular specialty lens.

Case presentations will highlight deconditioning due to illness, loss of strength due to sarcopenia, or impaired messages to the muscles due to neurological damage. The particular time and attention will be paid to providing participants with useful, evidence-based treatment strategies for the problems of voice and swallowing in each video case presentation. Participants will leave the seminar with useful treatment techniques to use in therapy with their patients who are presenting with both voice and swallowing disorders.

Conference Objectives are :
• Identify 5 validated tools to use in the assessment of parameters of importance in voice and swallowing.
• Describe 3 treatment approaches that can be used in both the treatment of dysphonia and dysphagia.
• Recognize the importance of patient autonomy and ethical practices in voice and swallowing.
• Translate information from principles of exercise science into treatment decisions in voice and swallowing.
• Integrate information from clinical and instrumental assessments and knowledge of exercise principles to determine evidence-based, person-centered treatment.
