Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry at Sea is organized by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Dentistry Continuing Education, Oregon Health And Science University (OHSU) and will be held during Jun 24 - Jul 01, 2018 at 7-Night Western Mediterranean Cruise, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Presentation Title: Medical Emergencies Update 2018

Presentation Description :
Medical emergencies can and do occur in dental practices every day. Over the next fifteen years the segment of the population at highest risk for medical emergencies, those 65 and older, will become a larger percentage of our patients. The entire dental team must be prepared to recognize and respond to a variety of medical emergencies that could be precipitated by the stress of the dental environment. This course will discuss the diagnosis, prevention, and management of common medical emergencies that might occur in dental offices. This four-hour course is appropriate for the entire dental team.
Educational Objectives :
At the end of the presentation, attendees should be able to:
• Identify patient risk factors that put them at increased risk for development of medical emergencies.
• Recognize the common medical emergencies based on the signs and symptoms demonstrated by the patient.
• Develop a rational approach to the management of medical emergencies in general and specific protocols for managing each medical emergency.
• Identify modifiable risk factors for medical emergencies and understand methods to help prevent their occurrence in the dental environment.

Presentation is a useful review of Diagnoses and Treatment modalities for Periodontal diseases, Peri-implant disease and Soft tissue deficiencies. It also incorporates esthetic zone as it is frequently affected by all of the above conditions and presents a clinical challenge on how to obtain and maintain healthy and esthetically acceptable solution for the patient.
Educational Objectives :
At the end of the presentation, attendees should be able to:
• Classify Periodontitis and Peri-implantitis, understand etiology of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, select suitable surgical and non-surgical therapy including periodontal splinting.
• Provide implant maintenance for patients.
• Identify and Diagnose mucogingival conditions and soft tissue deficiencies around teeth and implants and determine appropriate treatment.
• Understand proper soft and hard tissue relationships in esthetic zone, treatment plan anterior soft tissue component for esthetic smile, etiology and treatment for 'gummy smile', anterior crown lengthening.
• Understand indications for periodontal regenerative therapy/Guided tissue regeneration.

Presentation Title: Bone Grafting to Facilitate Implant Placement and Guided Implant Surgery

This lecture will familiarize participants with the common bone grafting procedures used in the oral and maxillofacial region to reconstruct alveolar ridge defects prior to implant placement. The Guided Implant Surgery lecture will familiarize participants with the different types of guided surgery available to practitioners and present cases where guided surgery was utilized for implant placement.

At the end of the presentation, attendees should be able to:
• Review the biology of bone graft healing and the current grafting materials available to the dental practitioner.
• Review the procedures available to correct horizontal and vertical alveolar ridge defects.
• Review the procedures available for grafting the maxillary sinus to facilitate implant placement.
• Recite the different types of guided surgery currently available to the dental practitioner.
• Learn how to treatment plan and execute guided surgery implant cases using currently available digital technology.
