Course Description:
The heart is central: the interplay between heart diseases and other organs’ functionality
Inter-organ communication is required to maintain homeostasis in multi-organ organisms. The heart, with its vascular network, is central for life-supporting function. Cardiovascular disease causes changes in e.g. hemodynamics that may impact the function of other body organs. These changes may cause stress and failure of adapting organs, such as liver and kidney. Fully understanding the effects and consequences of heart/vessel dysfunctions on other organs is crucial to prevent and treat cardiovascular-mediated multi-organ diseases.
In this lecture, evidence that diseases should be studied and treated in an integrated manner will be presented. Also, recently proposed approaches for multi-organ diagnosis and treatment will be summarized, analyzing their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the main challenges for the future success of multi-organ approaches will be discussed, highlighting the need for extensive collaboration between disciplines.
Personalized cardiovascular medicine: sense or nonsense?
The relatively small differences that exist between individuals can result in huge differences in responses to drugs and medical care in general. Accounting for these differences by personalizing medical treatments might improve the efficacy of medications and therapies, thereby increasing the life-quality of patients. However, such personalization requires a considerable investment of time and money.
In this lecture, the current approaches towards a personalized cardiovascular medicine will be summarized, highlighting lab-on-chip and modeling techniques aimed at enabling personalized treatments. The potential advantages of these techniques, compared to current approaches, will be evaluated against their associated requirements, challenges, and inherent limitations. This will trigger a discussion towards the level of personalization necessary in today’s medicine: is accounting for age and gender differences between patients sufficient, or an even higher level of personalization is advantageous?
