Course Description :
Integrative Dental Medicine is a rapidly expanding field that every Dawson Dentist must understand. In this course, three experts will describe the detailed evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for disordered breathing, sleep apnea, bruxism, and associated local and systemic complications.

We have an opportunity in Dentistry to play a very significant role in the diagnosis and medical management of what now is described as “disordered breathing”. These problems are typically present during daytime breathing, as well as nighttime, and can dramatically affect total health.

Often these medical problems can have dental solutions, including oral appliance, orthodontics, and orthognathic surgery.

Conference Objectives are :
• Discover the effects of early childhood disordered breathing on growth and development, including dental arches, occlusion, nasal passages, respiratory issues, and cognitive development.
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of disordered breathing and sleep apnea.
• Develop protocols for screening patients for disordered breathing including sleep apnea.
• Create medical protocols for testing and diagnosis.
• Review Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) – the appropriate medical usage for snoring/sleep apnea/hypopnea.
• Design protocols for managing snoring/sleep apnea/hypopnea in the dental office.
• Define how to take a correct bite registration for anterior repositioning the mandible to open the airway using oral appliance therapy.
• Review medical insurance codes and financial options for treating sleep apnea.
• Recognize the possible occlusal complications associated with sleep apnea appliances and how to manage them.
• Identify the Buteyko principles of retraining proper breathing, including mouth taping.
• Utilize a decision tree for evaluating and diagnosing Masticatory System disorders.
• Specify the various occlusal splint options and their appropriate usage.
• Prepare fees for various treatment regimens involving splint therapy.
