Course Description :
Mental health has never been so much in the news, with princes and celebrities increasingly going public with their own personal struggles. Yet there is still much misunderstanding about what it means to be mentally ill, and a lingering social stigma that leaves many people and their loved ones unsure about how to cope.
In this one-day event, we will explore what it means to be mentally ‘normal’, and how that definition has varied throughout history and across the world. We explore how treatments have evolved from trepanation and exorcisms to an understanding of the brain in both health and disease. We’ll look at the many causes of mental illness, from genetics to life experience and a combination of both, and the emerging understanding of how bodily health interacts with the mind. And, whilst acknowledging the challenges that remain for the next generation of scientists, we will look at how we might tweak our own lives to protect our mental health.
Join us for a fascinating tour of the human mind, in sickness and in health.
Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
