OVERVIEW

Surgical Healthcare Challenge is organized by American College of Perioperative Medicine (ACPM), MIT Hacking Medicine and will be held from Sep 29 - 30, 2018 at Edwards Lifesciences Corp., Irvine, California, United States of America.

Course Description:
While surgical and anesthesia care in the US is exceptional in many respects, some areas could be significantly improved. To address some of the challenges we plan to hold a 48-hour hackathon.

What is a "hackathon"? It is a portmanteau of the words "hack" and "marathon". A "hack" is a solution to a problem that is developed by intense innovative teamwork in a short amount of time. A hackathon is therefore a race to solve challenges against time.

Who are the organizers: American College of Perioperative Medicine in partnership with MIT Hacking Medicine which has organized to date more than 150 hackathons across 15 countries and 5 continents. Over 40 companies have been created, raising over $150M in venture funding.

Structure: 100 attendees that will be organized into teams of 3-7 individuals. Each team will be assigned 1-2 mentors that will support the team with mentorship the weeks before the event and during the event.
Teams: Will consist of doctors, patients, nurses, engineers, developers, designers, business people, insurance, and policy experts. These teams will solve a pre-defined problem that will be identified in the pitch phase.

Prizes: A total of up to $35,000 will be given to the top 3 teams. The actual sums awarded will be decided by the investors based on their project evaluation.

Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
