OVERVIEW
Geriatrics for Primary Care Providers is organized by Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and will be held on Jun 23, 2018 at MD Anderson Mitchell Basic Science Research Building Onstead Auditorium, Houston, Texas, United States of America.
The target audience for this medical event is Primary Care Providers, Internists, Family Medicine Practitioners, Hospitalists, General Medicine, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 7.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Course Description:
This course is designed to address the unmet educational needs of primary care providers who serve a diverse case mix that includes complex older adults. Content will be focused on clinical problems encountered in daily primary care practice. Content will be presented by geriatric faculty who are nationally recognized for their expertise in chronic disease management. Course content will combine best practice strategies and education through case studies and lectures. One-hour CME for ethics will be included. Each session will include time for questions and answers and an audience response system will allow immediate feedback regarding CME test questions. A full syllabus of educational materials will be provided.
Needs Statement:
Unfortunately the pool of Board Certified Geriatricians appears to be shrinking at a time when increased numbers are needed for the expanding population of the elderly. The combination of the aging of the Baby Boom population and an increase in life expectancy will mean that older adults make up a much larger percentage of the U.S. population than ever before. Institute of Medicine’s landmark report, Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Healthcare Workforce, states "unless action is taken immediately, the health care workforce will lack the capacity to meet the needs of older patients in the future." 20,000 Geriatricians are needed currently to care for over 14 million older Americans. However, as of 2016, there were only 7,293 certified Geriatricians nationwide. Therefore, currently, medical care for older Americans is often reliant on the Primary Care Physician. The purpose of this interactive course is for non-Geriatricians to learn to effectively identify, evaluate, and treat special care needs of the elderly.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:
• Apply current evidence-based concepts in geriatric medicine to daily practice caring for elders
• Identify psychosocial problems and ethical issues in decision-making
• Diagnose and manage the major geriatric syndromes including Dementia, Depression, Delirium, Pain management, Falls, and Osteoporosis
• Identify basic principles of geriatric medicine
