Faculty of Psychotherapy Conference 2018: Rediscovering Psychotherapy: The Long and the Short of it is organized by Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and will be held from Aug 24 - 26, 2018 at National Wine Centre of Australia, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

Contemporary clinical psychiatry encompasses phenomenology and diagnosis, neuroscience, pharmacotherapy, evidence-based treatment and practice-based evidence.

Underneath modern psychiatry runs the vein of intuition that is fundamental, dependable and presupposed – talking and thinking. The tools of our trade help us construct our impression of a patient capable of his or her own subjective experience and are then the means of our interaction with the patient. It is also how we learn, teach and exchange ideas in psychiatry.

Exploring the inner experience in psychiatry is the birthright passed to us from the observances of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy provides us with the semantics with which to talk and think about our patient’s past, character, transference and resistance and bestows us both frame and freedom in the practice of supervision. However, language is constantly renewed and new languages emerge.

We wish to rediscover psychotherapy traditions, principles and advances in all settings of the psychiatry of today and explore the new frontiers. We would like to rediscover the act of 'talking and thinking' in assessments and treatments, in outpatient and inpatient settings and in different therapy modalities and talk and think about the underlying research. We offer two distinguished keynote speakers in the long and the short psychotherapy modalities: Transference Focused Psychotherapy and Psychodynamic-Interpersonal Therapy respectively.

In addition to other invited speakers, free papers and social activities, we are excited to invite participants to stay on for a two-day post-conference workshop. The post-conference workshop is with Professor Eve Caligor on Transference Focused Psychotherapy. Participants will also be able to learn about what is available to them to pursue TFP training and qualifications.
