American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) 2018 Seminar in Forensic Toxicology is organized by American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) and will be held from Dec 13 - 14, 2018 at The Highland Dallas, Curio Collection by Hilton, Dallas, Texas, United States of America.
The target audience for this medical event is physicians, pharmacists, nurses, scientists, social workers, attorneys, law enforcement, and public health specialists. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 13.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Course Description:
This encore seminar will focus on the forensic and medical-legal aspects of opioid use, abuse, prescribing, and addiction by presenting real cases encountered by medical toxicology experts. The seminar will be tailored to the interests of physicians and other scientists involved in numerous disciplines, including medical toxicology, forensic & laboratory medicine, addiction medicine, and the legal community.
Course Objectives are:
• Describe the depth and scope of the current opioid epidemic and system-wide responses to ameliorate it by prescription monitoring programs, educational efforts, and antidote availability.
• Discuss the importance of opioid tolerance when analyzing cases of opioid overdose deaths and toxicity, and application of this knowledge in assessing family court implications, and potential performance impairment from opioid use at work and when driving motor vehicles.
• Understand autopsy findings in opioid-related deaths and certification as a cause of death, potential co-morbidities, adulterants and co-ingestants, and the pitfalls associated with interpreting post-mortem blood concentrations of opioids.
• Discuss the importance of using the proper specimen matrix and source for opioid testing, as well as important issues regarding specimen handling, storage, analysis, and confirmation.
• Understand the roles and liabilities of opioid prescribers (pain management, primary care, etc.), pharmacies, and addiction medicine specialists, as they relate to opioid-related deaths both in-hospital and as outpatients, to include the issues of use and abuse of methadone, buprenorphine, and fentanyl.
