OVERVIEW
Fourth Annual Cancer Disparities Conference: Changing the Paradigm through Science and Community Engagement is organized by The Ohio State University and will be held on Mar 10, 2018 at The Longaberger Alumni House, Columbus, Ohio, United States of America. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 5.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Description:
Disparities in health care are complex and multifactorial. There are various patient and health system factors that contribute to disparities in the colorectal cancer care continuum (from prevention to survivorship). At the patient level, cultural beliefs and distrust of the medical system present significant barriers. There are also socioeconomic factors that limit access to quality care and a make understanding medical diagnoses such as cancer and the importance of screening, diagnosis, and treatment of such conditions challenging. At the health care provider level and system level, barriers include lack of physician recommendation for screening and systems that rely on patients having insurance and/or a usual source of care to receive cancer screening education and tests. More importantly, the literature clearly shows that when these vulnerable groups are diagnosed with cancer, they are less likely to be treated and/or enrolled in clinical trials. Therefore, there exists a dire need for education-based outreach programs aimed at engaging both community members and health care providers regarding colorectal cancer prevention and care.
Conference Objectives are :
At the conclusion of this continuing medical education activity participants should be able to:
• Describe best practices, current challenges and opportunities in addressing cancer disparities.
• Identify factors that link diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer and how to prevent them.
• Explain the role of obesity in cancer and cancer disparities.
• Identify areas of intersection between inflammation, the microbiome and cancer disparities.
• Implement mindfulness in improving outcomes in the care continuum.
• Define and/or implement strategies to reduce disparities in colorectal cancer.
• Describe factors influencing lung cancer disparities and best practices in reducing them.
• Utilize examples of leadership in being a change in the community to improve health outcomes.
