17th Annual Pediatric Symposium: A Multispecialty Approach to Pediatric Care is organized by Baptist Health South Florida and will be held on Sep 22, 2018 at South Miami Hospital, Victor E. Clarke Education Center, Miami, Florida, United States of America.

Course Descrption:
The pediatric practitioner has the special and important responsibility to diagnose and manage patients with a multitude of ailments, injuries and diseases. This symposium will provide practical, evidence-based strategies to strengthen healthcare competencies. Expert faculty will explain recent advances in diagnosis, management, and treatment and address compelling issues as they relate to hemolytic-uremic syndrome, vaccines, death in pediatrics, nephrotic syndrome, transgender and gender-nonconforming issues, and diseases affected by environmental and climate changes. Our distinguished keynote speaker will discuss best practices for self-auditing and measurement of data in private practice to optimize clinical and practice outcomes in today’s evolving healthcare environment. There will be ample opportunity for Q&A with the faculty during the panel discussion.
Course Objectives:
• Utilize appropriate diagnostic strategies to identify symptoms of conditions that most commonly cause dysphagia.
• Recognize the broad spectrum of the differential diagnosis.
• Determine the appropriate time to refer to a specialist.
• Utilize interprofessional and interdisciplinary teams to diagnose and treat patients with dysphagia.
• Identify long-term effects of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment, and follow protocols to minimize acute and late toxicities.
• Advise patients and family members on current treatment of ALL, taking into consideration the efficacy and toxicity management of current protocols.
• Describe current survivorship statistics in pediatric ALL by utilizing the response and relapse criteria.
• Describe the historical context of adolescence as a developmental period.
• Integrate brain development patterns into screening methodology.
• Utilize brief screening methods for anxiety and depression in adolescents.
• Recognize the role of parents and society in creating the environment for violence.
• Describe the various factors contributing to youth violence and how these elements are creating a public health crisis among the youth in our communities. Recognize the role a youth’s backstory plays in the develop
ment of effective urban youth conflict resolution.
• Apply recommendations and suggestions to prevent or mitigate youth violence and the public health issues it presents.
• Utilize the American Academy of Pediatrics’ new pediatric hypertension clinical practice guidelines to identify and address patients presenting with this chronic disease.
• Recognize the appropriate time to refer the pediatric patient with hypertension to a pediatric nephrologist.
• Describe clinical situations when a restricted diet for a food allergy is indicated.
• Describe the various types of vegetarian diets and identify the nutritional considerations associated with each.
• Work in interdisciplinary teams to provide optimal patient care to patients with special dietary needs.
