The target audience for this medical event for Psychologists, Pathologists.

Course Description :
Diverse medical disciplines have come to recognize that the causes of many of the world’s leading forms of death and disability originate early in life – often before birth. Ironically, while the earliest thinkers in psychiatry emphasized early developmental origins of psychopathology, such views fell out of fashion in the past 50 years. But over this period, discoveries of the potential and limitations of psychiatric genetics have underscored the essential interweaving of early social and biological conditions, along with the role of the human genome in the origins of psychopathology. In parallel with the great efforts in seven decades of large birth cohort studies, the pendulum has shifted, with thousands of papers written on these cohorts, and hundreds of researchers studying human development and psychopathology from a life course viewpoint. Beyond early origins, life course approaches consider transitions from prodrome to full disorder, the impact of treatment on disease course, the occurrence of comorbidity, and more. This annual APPA meeting uses a life course perspective to review a range of psychiatric disorders, from depression to ADHD to anorexia, across the world and the human life span. We have invited specialists in different ways of looking at the world of psychopathology, from epidemiology to social psychiatry, from epigenetics to brain structure and function. We will explore the life course effects of violence, trauma, and drug abuse, and speculate about the next decade of research. Directors of the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism will speak at the meeting. Authors of five outstanding posters will each make brief oral presentations of their work prior to the traditional Thursday evening poster session. Life course research is already common in fields as diverse as economics, sociology, physiology, and demographics; we hope that this meeting will also encourage more research with a life course perspective in the study of psychopathology.

Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
