Overall Goals :
Worldwide COPD and lower respiratory tract infections are tied for the third leading causes of death behind only cardiovascular disease and stroke. However, if one combines the mortality figures for COPD, lower respiratory tract infections, and cancers of lung, bronchus, trachea, data suggests diseases of the chest are now the number one cause of death worldwide. Recognizing its importance, the Divisions of Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonary Medicine are hosting a symposium on treating advanced lung disease.
Topics will include COPD, interstitial lung diseases, mycobacterial disease, pulmonary vascular disease, acute respiratory failure, lung cancer and diaphragmatic dysfunction. The symposium will explore cutting edge approaches to some of these issues including medical advances, and more interventional approaches such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, lung volume reduction surgery, endobronchial lung volume reduction, lung transplantation, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, diaphragm plication and pacing.

• Describe present state of the art for management of pulmonary hypertension including chronic thromboembolic disease
• Identify the options for lung cancer management in patients with limited respiratory reserve
