This course is designed for otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons interested in endoscopic approaches to the pituitary sella. In recent years there has been a trend for neurosurgeons to address tumors of the pituitary with an endoscopic transnasal approach. This results in a close collaboration of the two specialties. A panel of neurosurgeon and otolaryngologist experts will present common surgical indications, pre- and post-operative care, surgical anatomy, closure of CSF leaks, and strategies for successful patient management. In the afternoon, attendees will practice surgical techniques in a hands-on cadaver lab with image-guidance at UCSF’s high-tech Anatomy Learning Center.

Take your rhinology skills to the next level! Endoscopic surgery of the skull base and pituitary have undergone significant advances. Expanded techniques offer access to a variety of lesions of the skull base. Pituitary surgery is the foundation of endoscopic skull base where otolaryngologists learn to work as a team with neurosurgeons and learn basic techniques such as closure of csf leaks and exposure of the pituitary gland. Practical tips learned from over a decade of experience will be covered, such as post-operative care, tumor outcomes, and minimizing complications.

Course features optional afternoon hands-on surgical cadaver lab at UCSF's new cutting edge surgical training facility! Excellent instructor to learner ratio. Everyone will get plenty of time practicing hands-on skull base surgical procedures with image guidance.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Identify the basic anatomy of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses;
• Describe the endoscopic landmarks and surrounding anatomy of the pituitary gland and sella;
• Describe common pituitary tumors and nonsurgical treatments;
• Discuss the rational for endocrine management strategies after pituitary surgery;
• Describe important landmarks for approach to the pituitary gland;
• Perform the expanded endonasal endoscopic approach to the pituitary sella;
• Identify available local flaps for closure of pituitary defects and CSF leaks;
• Describe non-vascularized closure techniques of cranial defects;
• Employ nasal hygiene strategies after endonasal pituitary surgery.

Out of town participants are welcome to stay at the Palace hotel in downtown San Francisco. Shuttle transportation will be provided from the Palace Hotel to the conference site.
