The Target Audience for this medical event for perioperative nurses and healthcare professionals who are involved with surgical procedures that require blood conservation and use of hemostatic agents and sealants. This CME Conference has been approved with a maximum of 4.8 Category I CEUs.
Overview :
This course will provide an overview of the risks associated with blood transfusions and rationale for minimizing the use of transfusions. The focus will be on hemostatic agents and sealants to reduce patient bleeding during surgery. It is critical that nurses understand the uses and application of topical agents in order to use them appropriately. The presentations will cover blood conservation, the use and application of hemostatic agents and sealants. Each participant will be given the opportunity for open discussion and simulated questions to emphasize the appropriate use.
Conference Objectives are :
Upon completion of this seminar, the nurse/health professional should be able to :
• Describe the basis for a paradigm shift to address the overuse of blood products, including supply, cost, risk, adverse outcomes and efficacy.
• Delineate the rationale for and ‘pillars’ of blood conservation.
• Differentiate surgical hemostats, sealants and adhesives; including their composition, mechanism of action and differences among products.
• Discuss indications, contraindications,appropriate selection and correct application techniques to ensure safe and efficacious use.
