Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
• Examine the risks of high dose opioid use and look at the statistics surrounding morbidity and mortality associated with opioid overdose.
• Reflect and strategize on how to maintain empathy and treat pain appropriately in the midst of the opioid epidemic.
• Discuss the increasingly complicated navigation of controlled substance formularies, how to interact successfully with prescription companies and navigate the world of prior authorizations.
• Discuss the potential for medical marijuana use in pain control for seriously ill patients and examine both the public and provider opinions around this substance.
• Discuss the Pennsylvania plan for medical marijuana and associated time line.
• Via the use of case based examples, examine multiple facets of the seriously ill patient requests to die.
• Examine the legal aspects of physician aid in dying across the country and how to counsel patients.
• Expand understanding of the driving factors that push patients to ask for aid in dying and explore strategies for all providers to use to discuss the issues behind such requests – from pain to depression to spiritual suffering.
• Increase understanding of the unique perspectives on children with serious illness and how r equests to discontinue life support affect both a child and their family, as well as explore the different practical, emotional and legal facets to pediatric palliative care patients in this setting.
• Assess their individual practices in light of the information and discussions during the course, and identify specific strategies to implement as part of a continuing improvement process for their practices within the field of Palliative Care.
