In September 2015, NHS England launched new National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (NatSSIPs) to support health organisations to provide safer care and reduce the number of patient safety incidents related to invasive procedures. The publication of the standards was followed by a Patient Safety Alert which requires all relevant NHS and private healthcare providers to take local action to put the standards.

These standards will form part of the Care Quality Commission inspection process and their successful implementation will enable providers to reduce surgical never events.
