Dental Sleep Medicine Mini - Residency 5 Session Course (Feb, 2016) is organized by UCLA School of Dentistry and would be during Feb 5 - Jun 4, 2016 at UCLA School of Dentistry - Los Angeles, California.The targeted audience for this medical event basically for dentists.
There is a growing interest among the dental profession to learn how to treat patients with sleep-disordered breathing with oral appliances. The ability to have a continuum of education that will provide this opportunity in a structured fashion is not readily available at the present time. The UCLA mini-residency program is designed to offer a comprehensive experience for the practicing dentist that will connect the medical and dental aspects to this medical disorder. At the completion of the program, the dentist will be competently trained to provide care for these patients. The mini-residency will take place over five sessions (1 ½ days per month) for a five month period. The course will be comprised of Friday lectures on dental sleep medicine and a Saturday clinical hands-on experience that will culminate in the actual delivery, adjusting and modification of an oral appliance.
Session 1:
• Sleep apnea and sleep breathing disorders
• The basics of sleep medicine
• The role of the dentist in sleep medicine
• Head / neck / airway evaluation
• Management of sleep breathing disorders with emphasis on oral appliance therapy
• Orofacial pain evaluation
Session 2:
• Understanding the polysomnogram (sleep study)
• Orofacial pain and sleep
• Bite registration for oral appliance therapy
• Sleep bruxism
• Practice management
• TMJ disorders
Session 3:
• Medical and health conditions related to sleep disorders
• Imaging for sleep breathing disorders
• Other sleep disorders of importance to dentists
• Delivery and adjustment of an oral appliance
Session 4:
• Pediatric and adolescent sleep disorders
• Follow-up for oral appliance therapy
• Assessment of success in oral appliance therapy
• Portable monitoring as an assessment tool for the dentist
• Management of TMD symptoms
Session 5:
• Adjunctive treatment for sleep disorders
- Myofunctional therapy
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
• Airway anatomy and respiratory physiology
• Continued follow-up of oral appliance therapy
- How to assess success
- Follow-up sleep study testing
• Case presentations by the residents
