Target Audience
This course is for perioperative nurses and other healthcare professionals who are
involved with surgical procedures that require blood conservation and the use of
hemostatic agents and sealants.
Overview
This course will provide an overview of the risks associated with blood transfusions
and rationale for minimizing the use of transfusions. The focus will be on hemostatic
agents and sealants to reduce patient bleeding during surgery. It is critical that nurses
understand the uses and application of topical agents in order to use them appropriately.
The presentations will cover blood conservation, the use and application of hemostatic
agents and sealants. Each participant will be given the opportunity for open discussion
and simulated questions to emphasize the appropriate use.
Objectives
Upon completing this educational activity, the participant should be able to:
• Discuss the rationale and need for blood conservation during surgical procedures.
• Explain options for blood conservation.
• Differentiate the classes of topical surgical hemostats, sealants and adhesives, including their composition, mechanism of action and the clinical differences that exist between products.
• Describe indications, contraindications, appropriate selection and correct application techniques in ensure safe and efficacious use.
