Managing Pain and Infection in Dental Practice :

Pain and infection are the most common problems in dental practice that require pharmacological intervention. To manage these complications effectively, attention must be given to the patient’s current medical status and potential drug interactions as well as controversies surrounding opioid abuse and antimicrobial misuse and resistance. This presentation will clarify current concerns and provide safe and effective strategies for patient management.

At the conclusion of this seminar, the participants should be better able to :

• Recognize medical issues that influence the selection of drug regimens including the clarification of allergies and potential drug interactions.
• Discuss basic principles that guide the selection of specific regimens for both the prevention as well as the management of existing pain, inflammation and infection.
• Describe the essential pharmacological features of opioid analgesics, glucocorticosteroids and antimicrobials.
