Cilia, Mucus & Mucociliary Interactions - Translating Assembly and Function to Imaging, Genetic and Therapeutic Discovery

Since its inception, the GRC on Cilia, Mucus, and Mucociliary Interactions has provided a unique forum that brings together researchers from multiple closely related disciplines. Topics revolve around the relationship between motile cilia, mucus and fluids with varying viscoelastic properties that are an essential component of fundamental biological processes. As such, issues related to development, cell biology, signaling, biochemistry, biophysics, innate immunity, genetics, and others are embraced. The result is a highly integrated, international gathering of basic scientists, bioengineers, translational investigators, and clinicians who study the components of the mucociliary apparatus, the fundamentals of cilia and mucus biology, and their interface. We will continue the tradition of past meetings by featuring cutting-edge research of the special functions of motile cilia and mucus related to diseases such as cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, chronic rhinosinusitis, asthma, and COPD. The 2015 meeting will also include sessions that address specific gaps in our knowledge such as:

What are the cellular and molecular origins of newly identified genetic and acquired dysfunction of cilia, mucin and mucus? How can we image components, functions and interactions of cilia and mucus at the molecular level with high resolution? How do defects in mucus and cilia impact mucosal immunity? As we translate basic discoveries, what diagnostic and therapeutic approaches can monitor and correct defects?

The meeting will open with keynote talks from eminent scientists who will detail the current state-of-the-art and paradigms, and articulate the key challenges for the future. For each session, discussion leaders will provide a brief introduction and perspective on the topics to be covered. Established and up-and- coming scientists will present new unpublished data, as is the tradition of GRCs. Sessions will include speakers from inside and outside the field, and some sessions will include short talks selected from submitted abstracts to include the latest "hot science". In addition to the platform presentations, afternoon poster sessions with "poster rounds" will highlight exceptional work and enhance investigator-trainee discussions. Throughout the meeting, a collegial atmosphere, broad ranging discussions, and informal gatherings will provide excellent opportunities for interactions and collaborations.
