OVERVIEW
The literature, recommended guidelines and protocols related to safe practices for suctioning during the
operative procedure are severely lacking. This critical discovery and the fact that there are inherent hazards
related to surgical suctioning is the impetus for the development of this continuing education activity. Content
will address the science of volumetric pressures, safety considerations for use of suction devices, suction
applications and the responsibility of the health care professional in the perioperative setting. A hands-on
workshop will provide opportunity to review and discuss suction safety on a selected waste management
suction device. Learner feedback and discussion will enhance knowledge and application in the practice setting.
The target audience is perioperative nurses, surgical technologists and other health care professionals
involved in using surgical suction devices that have requested advanced knowledge and skills in the use of
new technology.
