Global Health Bootcamp

Many of the skills needed in Global Health are not taught in traditional health professional curricula. Though many health professionals have strong clinical skills, they lack some low-cost, low-technology skills that would allow their clinical experience and knowledge to be applicable in the global setting. These topics and skills include health system design, value chain mapping, leadership training, ultrasound skills, servant leadership, and quality improvement principles in resource constrained settings. Hence, the UCSF Global Health Core, within the division of Hospital Medicine, is fashioning a continuing medical education program to cover these topics using simulation, hands-on training, and case studies exploring effective global health delivery programs. The Kanbar Center at UCSF will be utilized to simulate real-life scenarios to improve global ethics and clinical training skills. The Global Health Bootcamp at UCSF will feature both an in-person intense four day as well as an opportunity for longitudinal mentorship for one-year following the course. This extended mentorship opportunity will add significant strength to the program and foster the continuing development of skills amongst participants. Bootcamp attendance has been limited to a group of 36 learners to allow for small group sessions, intimate workshops and active discussions. Experienced inter-professional UCSF faculty as well as international experts on Global Health Delivery will lead the sessions. This combination of education and mentorship will create the “thread” for continuity in coming years to further build dialogue amongst our Global Health Bootcamp network.
