OVERVIEW

This two-day course will cover the medications used to treat chronic orofacial pain, including neurogenic, musculoskeletal, headache and uncommon pain disorders. To be able to treat patients with these problems, dentists must understand the underlying mechanisms of pain transmission, nerve injury and repair, sensitization, sympathetic pain maintenance and spontaneous ectopic pain generation. Dentists must be able to perform various analgesic blocks and sensory testing procedures as well as understand how these procedures combined with historical information allow for a differential etiologic-based diagnosis to be made. This course is divided into lecture presentations in the morning, demonstrations and workshops in the afternoon and specific case discussions at the end of the day.
