OVERVIEW

Residents and Fellows in Training (FITs) who are contemplating a future in academic medicine need guidance on the variety of career options available to them. According to the literature, fewer cardiovascular Fellows are entering into academic medicine but instead are entering into private practice because the perceived financial and personal benefits are greater. Further, the literature shows that only 30% of total grants reviewed by the NIH receive funding.

The American College of Cardiology seeks to address the need for competent researchers and academicians by providing How to Become a Cardiovascular Investigator, an opportunity for residents and FITs to learn about the challenges and benefits of academic careers from experienced faculty engaged in research.
