Environmental Change and Human Health

As a medical organization dedicated to patient health, the WMS focuses its efforts to advancing knowledge regarding responding to medical challenges in austere and wilderness environments; with the environment becoming an ever pressing global issue, the WMS must advocate for its well-being also, highlighting specifically how environmental change impacts human health.
Members of the Society pride themselves on “combining their profession with their passion”; a profession for doing what is best for their patients and a passion for the wilderness remaining on this planet. Advancing current knowledge regarding human implications of environmental change, and serving as active health-professional advocates for protecting the environment, is yet another way the WMS can serve not only its members, but its patients as well.
To demonstrate this commitment to the environment, the WMS is holding its first conference solely committed to the issue of the health of the environment. It will be held on Dauphin Island in November 2013 and we welcome you to join us there.
Following the Dauphin Island conference, the WMS will continue to do its part in affecting positive change in matters related to the environment in two powerful ways: Education and Advocacy. The WMS will make a commitment to offer its members up-to-date information regarding present issues affecting the global environment and our health. Furthermore, the WMS will make a commitment to advocate for environmental issues, utilizing our health-professional network to protect the wilderness that has brought us all together.
