“Allergists are facing challenging times,” said Michael Foggs, MD, FACAAI, president-elect and program chair. “Despite the fact that we offer unique services and value to our patients and to society, there have been encroachments on the territorial domain of our discipline. The health care paradigm has been shifting towards primary care with diminishing recognition of the value and importance of cognitive specialties and subspecialties.

“These new realities make it necessary for allergists to position themselves to be able to endure and overcome these growing pressures that potentially threaten our survival as a sustainable discipline. One way we intend to accomplish this goal is to provide valuable information at the Annual Meeting in a variety of areas. Scientific programs will expand knowledge and open new doors for clinical application opportunity, in areas ranging from the traditional allergic diseases that allergists have been managing for decades, to clinical application of disease states that will represent new areas for some,” he said.
