OVERVIEW

Major progress is being made in Alzheimer’s disease – understanding the biology, early diagnosis, and emerging therapies all promise to reshape the field. Treatments that can reduce symptoms and behavioral problems, and new guidelines suggest that the disease can be diagnosed early, before it becomes disabling, and that early pharmacologic treatment can improve symptoms and behaviors, and enhance quality of life. Alzheimer’s disease remains a major public health concern, is a common office problem, and new advances can help with patient management.

This continuing medical education activity will explain how to differentiate mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease from other causes. It will also examine the effectiveness of currently available therapies and demonstrate how to get the greatest benefit from neuropsychologic testing.
