Abdominal wall defects are one of the most common surgical challenges. Very little consensus currently exists on the appropriate roles and indications for primary closure vs. mesh closure vs. muscle/fascia release and advancement techniques and subsequent outcomes. The recurrence rates for abdominal wall defect repairs remain high, and potential complications can be catastrophic, leading to far more complex defects than on original presentation.
This meeting will be a comprehensive course on abdominal wall reconstruction covering all aspects of the general principles of abdominal wall reconstruction including anatomy and physiology as well as all options for abdominal wall reconstruction including laparoscopic vs. open repair, with and without inert vs. synthetic biomaterials, and open vs. endoscopic component separation.
This continuing medical education course is designed for general surgeons to recognize techniques and surgical management of abdominal wall reconstruction. The course will explore helpful ways to manage the difficult care of abdominal wall reconstruction. Surgeons will be expected to complete an evaluation to demonstrate competence. Surgeons will also be offered an opportunity for self-assessment credits toward Part 2 of the ABS MOC Program. The course will consist of didactic lectures, discussion, and hands-on animate practice.
