OVERVIEW
The Rocky Mountain Trauma and Emergency Medicine Conference is celebrating its 40th year of combined commitment to providing quality CME for emergency and trauma care providers. This conference is derived from the history of the former Colorado Trauma Symposium and the Rocky Mountain Conference on Emergency Medicine.
The Colorado Trauma Institute (CTI), established in 1983 for the purpose of bringing Colorado’s trauma system into being, launched the Colorado Trauma Symposium in 1985. CTI’s initial member facilities – Denver General Hospital, University Hospital and St. Anthony’s Hospital, worked together to provide much needed education to health care providers in the State. Soon more facilities including Swedish Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Lutheran Hospital and Aurora Presbyterian Hospital joined the voluntary CTI network to help improve trauma care in Colorado.
The Colorado Trauma Symposium had been a very successful forum in providing much needed collaboration and education in trauma care, with peak attendance nearing 1000 attendees. By 1999, with legislation having been passed 2 years earlier creating a trauma system in the State of Colorado, CTI was in its waning days. At about the same time, the Rocky Mountain Conference on Emergency Medicine was in need of a partner in order to maintain its high level of attendance. So that year, the two conferences combined their years of experience to create the 26th Annual Rocky Mountain Trauma and Emergency Medicine Conference.
Today, the conference strives to maintain this legacy by providing high quality, cutting edge education in emergency and trauma care, with multicenter collaboration. The conference attracts nationally and internationally renowned experts who bring our audience the most up to date information. The curriculum is created in cooperation between representatives of Denver Health, Centura Health, HealthONE, University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and others. In addition, the conference has enjoyed the support of the Colorado Committee on Trauma (COT), the Colorado chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), and the Colorado Emergency Nurses Association (ENA).
The conference was founded and directed through 2012 by Dr. Ernest E. Moore, who had been the Director of Surgery and Trauma at Denver Health for over 30 years. Linda Dodge and Tim Goodwin, of CTI, did an exceptional job with the initial development and running of the conference. After the CTI years, coordination of the conference was transitioned to Denver Health, while still relying on multi-center support. Kendra Moldenhauer coordinated the conference for several years until she handed over the reins to the current conference team.
In 2003, Dr. Moore was joined by conference co-director Dr. Christopher Colwell, Director of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health. Now in 2013, Dr. Colwell and Dr. Gregory J. Jurkovich, Denver Health’s Director of Surgery and Trauma, will be the conference directors. Drs. Jurkovich and Colwell bring many years of trauma and emergency care and research to their roles, are dedicated to maintaining the highest educational standards, and are constantly seeking to improve and expand the curriculum offered to our attendees.
The Rocky Mountain Trauma & Emergency Medicine Conference provides stellar learning opportunities emphasizing the latest techniques in trauma care and emergency medicine with a focus on a team-centered approach to caring for the most severely injured patients.
Many of our classes are held in large general session-style settings where participants can learn together from a variety of roles and perspectives. This conference provides an excellent educational opportunity for people whose expertise and interests lie in trauma and emergency medicine. Physicians, nurses, pre-hospital personnel, firefighters, search and rescue personnel, respiratory therapists and others will find a unique blend of information sharing and case studies.
