PURPOSE

This conference will address practical and clinically relevant information with an emphasis on new and continuing developments in geriatric medicine and related fields.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the course, the participant will be able to:

• Demonstrate that the treatment of stroke and neurological injury with cell therapy stimulates endogenous restorative mechanisms and significantly improves neurological outcome

• Review and discuss the evaluation and management of osteoporosis in older persons

• Understand kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty in older subjects with vertebral fractures

• Understand the device-based therapeutic approaches for interruption of sympathetic nervous system activity

• Understand the diagnostic criteria for resistant hypertension

• Understand the prognostic implications and therapeutic approaches to resistant hypertension

• Understand the importance of the sympathetic nervous system in uncontrolled resistant hypertension

• Understand the renal denervation procedure and the accumulated clinical trial efficacy and safety experience with this procedure

• Understand current standards of care for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy

• Learn how these standards apply, and may be modified, for diabetes in the senior age group

• Understand the relationship between systemic health and common oral health problems in geriatric care

• Learn assessment and management strategies for geriatric patients who present oral health concerns and systemic c-morbidities

• Learn to calculate the risk and benefit of anticoagulation for elderly patients with atrial fibrillation using validation risk stratification tools

• Learn to anticoagulate elderly patients with atrial fibrillation who are inappropriately taking aspirin or no therapy for stroke prevention.
