Recommended Audience: This course is intended for movement disorder specialists, functional neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners, other allied health personnel, and trainees who are involved in the selection, intra- or postoperative management of patients with movement disorders (tremor, dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, etc.) treated by deep brain stimulation surgery and want to strengthen their knowledge in this field. Course Description: The MDS-European Section 3rd Summer School on Neuromodulation for Movement Disorders gives a unique opportunity for neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses and other allied health personnel to receive an overview on neuromodulation techniques with hands-on sessions, in particular concerning deep brain stimulation (DBS). Students will attend lectures and panel discussions with question and answer sessions in the morning. They will also attend hand-on sessions dealing with the programming of CE marked DBS systems, surgical planning, postoperative lead location and visualized programming. Students will also see how to program and follow real patients with DBS, and engage in a constructive discussion with the international experts. Attendees are also encouraged to bring own case-study videos and discuss them with faculty. Topics will focus on all aspects of surgery for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremor and children with movement disorders. Learning Objectives: • Provide an overview of surgery for movement disorders patients, including mechanisms of action, basics in surgical techniques and intraoperative microrecording • Understand the criteria and the available tools for selection for DBS surgery in movement disorders patients • Discuss the different outcomes of DBS in movement disorders patients • Be familiar with the bases of DBS programming in the different movement disorders • Understand how to manage the most common side effects of DBS and medication in the short- and long-term follow-up using a multidisciplinary approach
