Dr. Steven Thorp, Ph.D., ABPP earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno, and completed postdoctoral research fellowships in geriatric psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and at the University of California, San Diego. He is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology and a licensed psychologist in California. Dr. Thorp is a Professor at the California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University. He has provided intensive training to clinicians nationwide, in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE). Dr. Thorp is the past Division Director at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, and he served as Program Director of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorders Clinical Team there for 7 years. He additionally served as the Director of the Family Mental Health Clinic and the Associate Director of the Military Sexual Trauma clinic at the VA. He also coordinated research and clinical work as the Co-Chief of the Psychotherapy Unit in the Center of Excellence for Stress and Mental Health.

Dr. Thorp has extensive training in assessment and psychotherapy with individuals who have experienced psychological trauma, with particular expertise in working with veterans, sexual assault survivors, and older adults with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has been awarded more than $6 million in federal grant funding for studies to investigate the clinical outcomes of psychotherapy, including the use of telemedicine for psychotherapy. Dr. Thorp has authored over 75 research publications and has given over 100 presentations at regional and national scientific conferences. He is active in professional organizations and as an ad hoc research manuscript reviewer. He also runs a private practice, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of PTSD.
