Roger Schutgens received his medical degree (cum laude) in 1996 at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He was trained in internal medicine between 1996 and 2003. During this period, he finished his thesis ‘Venous thrombosis and D-dimers – a new approach in diagnostic management’ and received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands, in 2003. In 2015, he completed his study epidemiology at the Free University of Amsterdam.

After his specialization in hematology (2004), Roger was appointed as a consultant hematologist (2004) at the department of benign hematology, thrombosis and hemostasis of the University Medical Center Utrecht: the Van Creveldkliniek. In the following years, Roger fulfilled positions as chair of the Blood Transfusion Committee and chair of the Anticoagulation Committee of the University Medical Center Utrecht. After being promoted to the medical coordinator (2008) and later head (2014-current) of the Van Creveldkliniek, he was appointed Full Professor in Thrombosis and Haemostasis at the University of Utrecht in 2016.

With his proven track record of scientific publications and awarded grants and prizes, Roger has created a significant international scientific position in the area of thrombosis and hemostasis research. He is a member of several Dutch working parties for national guidelines for benign hematology, iron chelation, hemophilia and allied disorders, and blood transfusion. He is a member of the steering committee of the European working group for cardiovascular diseases in hemophilia (ADVANCE) and the editorial board of the Dutch Journal of Haematology and the Dutch Journal for Blood Transfusion.
