Richard Balon, MD is Professor of Psychiatry and Anesthesiology, Program Director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program and Director of CME at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is also member of Graduate Faculty at Wayne State University. He has published widely in the area of sexual dysfunction associated with medications and human sexuality (including five books, biology of anxiety, clinical psychopharmacology and psychiatric education (2 books). He has served on the Wayne State University Institutional Review Board for the last 20 years. Dr. Balon's areas of expertise include sexual dysfunction in general and sexual dysfunction associated with various medications, clinical psychopharmacology, and psychiatric education.
He has received several teaching awards from residents at Wayne State University; First APA Annual Nancy CA Roeske Certificate for Excellence in Medical Student Education; 1999 Association for Academic Psychiatry Region VI Teacher of the Year Award; 1998 APA George Tarjan Award; APA Special Presidential Commendation in 2005; APA/NIMH Vestermark Psychiatry Educator Award, and Faculty Award for Excellence in Clinical Science Teaching at Wayne State University in 2013. He serves on editorial boards of several journals, including Annals of Clinical Psychiatry(Book Review Editor), Academic Psychiatry (Deputy Editor), Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, Psychotherapy & Psychosomatics, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Indian Journal of Psychiatry, Suicide and Life Threatening Behavior, FOCUS and Psychiatric Times.
