Dr. Renee Koval attended the University of Kentucky for her BSN degree, graduating in 1993. Her nursing career began on an inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric unit. The next step in her early career found her working in the antepartum/labor & delivery unit as well as an outpatient ocular plastic surgery center. Dr. Koval then moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 2003 and once again was called to work on an inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric unit. Dr. Koval then embarked on a journey to advance her nursing degree and received her MSN from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2006 specializing as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She worked as a clinical nurse manager and later as the director of nursing for several adolescent residential treatment facilities that were part of a larger behavioral health system.

Dr. Koval has always harbored a love for teaching and has taught in various nursing programs, including Practical Nursing, a BSN accelerated program, an RN to BSN online program, and also served as a clinical instructor. In 2014, Dr. Koval was the first nurse in the nation to complete a psychiatric nurse practitioner residency program in a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Koval received her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2015 from the Medical University of South Carolina. She is published in the Journal of Nursing Addictions and wrote a clinical exemplar in the Principles and Practice of Psychiatric Nursing 10th Ed text book.
