Peggy El-Mallakh received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Conn. She received her Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Kentucky in 1998, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the UK in 2005. The focus of her doctoral studies was self-care management among people with comorbid schizophrenia and diabetes mellitus. She completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship in evidence-based practice implementation in 2008. From 2003 to 2006, she was the program manager for the fidelity assessment team in the SAMHSA-funded Kentucky Medication Algorithm Project (KyMAP). This study implemented medication management evidence-based practice in community mental health centers in Kentucky. In her most recent research project, she investigated the experience of family caregiving for people with co-morbid schizophrenia and diabetes mellitus.

Dr. El-Mallakh’s research has been published in Psychiatric Services, Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, International Psychiatry, Issues in Mental Health Nursing, Journal of Psychosocial and Mental Health Nursing, and Nursing Clinics of North America. She has also presented research at conferences for the International Society for Psychiatric Nurses, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, International Congress on Schizophrenia Research, and Sigma Theta Tau International.
