Muhammad Mahdi Nashatizadeh MD

Muhammad Mahdi Nashatizadeh, M.D., was born and raised in Emporia, Kansas, and completed his undergraduate degree in 1998 with the highest honors as a University Scholar at Emporia State University, where he majored in biology and minored in chemistry. He completed his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City in 2003.

He completed his internship in internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita in 2004 before returning to Kansas City to complete his neurology residency in 2007. After serving as chief resident during 2006-2007, he pursued additional movement disorder fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, then returned to Kansas in 2008. He is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

Known as "Dr. Muhammad" by numerous patients over the years, his academic career was postponed for seven years as he worked as a neurohospitalist at a community hospital and evaluated people with either movement and/or cognitive disorders in his outpatient clinic. He returned to the University of Kansas School of Medicine as faculty in the Department of Neurology in November 2015.

He has served as the director of Inpatient Movement Disorders since 2017. He is the primary attending covering the inpatient academic neurology consultation service. In this role, he works with emergency medicine, internal medicine, rehabilitation, and surgery services to assess and address the neurological issues affecting hospitalized patients. He also educates geriatrics fellows; residents from neurology, internal medicine, and psychiatry; and medical students. His teaching emphasizes understanding how systemic medical disease can affect patients neurologically and recognizing and identifying how multiple layers of neurological illness affect hospitalized patients.

For these efforts, he was selected as a top five finalist for the prestigious Rainbow Award in 2018-2019. He has also been voted the Neurology Attending Educator of the Year (Student Voice Award) by third-year medical students during the years 2017-2021.
