Dr. Heller is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and a pioneer in the area of point of care ultrasonography. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at SUNY Buffalo in 1977 followed by a year of practice which included the Indian Health Service. In 1978 he began his career in academic Emergency Medicine when he joined the new Emergency Medicine Residency at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, California before moving to the University of California at San Francisco in 1979 for three years as Director of the Moffitt Emergency Department at the University Hospital. Continuing his efforts at facilitating the development of the specialty of Emergency Medicine, he joined the University of Pittsburgh’s young Emergency Medicine Program in 1984 where he stayed for more than a decade.
