Prof Gilbert obtained his D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 2003, after which he undertook postdoctoral work with Prof Mike Worobey at the University of Arizona. He moved to the University of Copenhagen in 2005 on a Marie Curie Fellowship, and became its first Professor of Palaeogenomics in 2011.

His research focuses on the development and application of new methods to better exploit both ancient and modern DNA, in order to answer questions of evolutionary biological, archaeological and anthropological relevance. He is the coordinator of the EUROTAST research network that is applying 21st century means to describe uncover and interpret new evidence on the history and legacy of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. He additionally holds an Adjunct Professorship at Curtin University (Australia).
